Child Watch

Child Watch

Onsight Rock Gym is pleased to offer our climbing community a child watch service for children ages 6 months to 6 years. During select hours, book a 2 hour child watch session and drop off your children to play in a safe and engaging environment while you get an opportunity to get in a great workout! Onsight's Child Watch is staffed with a ratio of 1:6 children and our staff are energetic and experienced individuals certified in CPR and First Aid. The Child Watch room features a glass door so parents can peek in and children can peer out into the gym. Our staff will keep your little ones entertained with storytelling, arts and crafts, fun and creative games, singing + dancing, and more! Other amenities include a changing station for parents to use, a separate baby corral, a bright and colorful custom designed art mural, and even a custom built climbing wall which wraps around a corner of the room that will inspire even the littlest monkeys to climb! Book a spot in advance and both you and your child(ren) will be psyched for your next climbing session at Onsight!

CHILD WATCH STAFF (aka expert child wranglers)

Maggie Elliott

Maggie grew up in Middle TN and migrated to East TN for school. After getting settled into Knoxville for school, she began to take advantage of all the outdoor activities this beautiful area had to offer. Maggie is what we would call a weekend warrior, spending her off days hiking, backpacking, trail running, climbing, caving, skiing, and kayaking. Currently, Maggie is in school working to get her Bachelor's for Elementary Education. During the week, Maggie is a Special Education Teaching Assistant at a middle school in Knox County. At NMS, Maggie works with high functioning autistic children in a specialized program. Besides her experience with KCS, Maggie has worked with kiddos ranging from infants to high school in public and private settings. Some of her past job titles would include lifeguard, daycare teacher, camp counselor, and Native Alaskan rural traveling camp staff. Maggie is passionate about helping children grow and develop, as well as exposing them to outdoors. She likes keeping kids engaged and entertained while their folks get to bust out some serious climb time in the gym!

Sam Hyde

Sam grew up in Michigan and has loved living in the mountains for the last 6 years. She has a degree in psychology and anthropology and is working towards getting a Masters in Education. Sam has had 18 years of extensive child care experience working with children of all ages and developmental abilities in their homes, in daycare settings, and in Montessori schools. She believes in actively engaging the children with whom she works, fully investing in them, and ensuring that they are not only mentally stimulated and emotionally supported, but that they have a great deal of fun! Sam is a huge fan of outdoor activities, imaginative play, dramatic arts, and music. She loves watching children make leaps and bounds everyday as their inquisitiveness leads them to all sorts of discoveries about the world around them. Sam's ultimate goal in working with children is to help empower them and to help make their ever-expanding experiences as fun, enriching, and empowering as possible. Sam is excited to join the child watch staff at Onsight and is looking forward to learning more about the sport of rock climbing!

Erin Kelbly

Erin is from central Texas, where she grew up horseback riding, four wheeling, biking, camping, and lake swimming. She was a Girl Scout from kindergarten to her senior year of high school, which heavily influenced her love for adventure and the outdoors. During her college years at “the other UT” (the University of Texas), she studied geography and geographic info systems (GIS), and now really enjoys bringing her GPS unit out on hikes and mapping her trips. She spontaneously moved to Knoxville in 2015 to join AmeriCorps and experience life in a different part of the country. She loves living in Knoxville and has decided to stay here for a few years! She enjoys longboarding and bicycling around town as well as hiking in the GSMNP as much as possible. Erin was introduced to rock climbing just a few months ago!! She really appreciates how welcoming and cool the climbing community is. So far, she’s climbed outdoors at the Obed and is looking forward to traveling to more crags soon!
